Workplace culture isn’t written in the handbook. It isn’t defined by the mission statement hanging on the wall.

Culture is how it feels to come to work. It’s how people treat each other, how they show up (or don’t), how they solve problems, and how they handle success.

When culture is good, work flows. When culture is off, everything feels harder than it should.

The challenge? Culture doesn’t change overnight. It drifts gradually, sometimes so slowly that you don’t realize how far off-course you’ve gotten until motivation hits rock bottom.

I hear this from leaders all the time:

“It feels like people just don’t care anymore.”“We’re stuck in this weird energy where nobody wants to speak up.”“Everyone is burned out, but no one knows how to fix it.”

The Truth About Culture

Culture isn’t static. It’s either getting better or it’s getting worse. If you’re noticing low energy, disengagement, or bad attitudes becoming the norm, it’s time to step in not with forced fun or empty slogans, but with intention.

3 Practical Tips to Shift an Unmotivating Culture

1. Name What’s Happening.People can feel when something is off, but few want to be the one to say it out loud. As a leader, you can diffuse a lot of tension simply by acknowledging it. “I’ve noticed energy feels low lately, let’s talk about what’s going on.” Transparency builds trust.

2. Reconnect to Purpose. When people forget why their work matters, motivation fades. Bring your team back to the bigger picture. How does what they do make a difference? What impact are they creating? Even small reminders can reignite pride and purpose.

3. Focus on Small Wins.Culture shifts through momentum, not mandates. Instead of launching sweeping initiatives, start by celebrating progress. Recognize effort. Share positive feedback. Create space for people to contribute solutions. Little wins lead to big change over time.
