How do you motivate burnt out employees when you're burnt out too?
How do you motivate burnt out employees when you're burnt out too?

Let’s just say it out loud: Leadership is a lot. Especially when you’re the one expected to lift the energy of the room even when yours is running on empty.

If you’ve ever found yourself pouring from a cup that feels bone-dry, you’re not alone. One of the hardest parts of leadership is showing up for your team while managing your own stress, uncertainty, or exhaustion.

Here’s the truth: You don’t have to be overflowing with motivation to help others find theirs. What you do need is awareness, intention, and the courage to model honesty over hustle.

Here’s how I help clients (and myself) when they're in this exact space:

1. Be real but stay steady.

You don’t have to pretend you’re thriving. In fact, authentic leaders build trust when they acknowledge challenges without spiraling into panic.Try: “I’ve been feeling the weight of everything too. So I’ve been focused on small shifts that help me refocus during the day. Let’s explore those together."

2. Shift from cheerleading to co-creating.

Burnout often thrives in isolation. Instead of trying to “pep talk” your team, engage them in finding solutions. Ask them what gives them energy, what drains them, and what small experiments you can try together to make the day smoother.

3. Invest in energynot just effort.

Motivation isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about creating environments where energy can circulate. That’s why I’ve started leading workshops that help people build their own Energy Playbooks. These custom tools help them reset and refocus, right in the middle of their workday.

Because motivation isn’t something we give people. It’s something we help them access.

If you’re a leader who’s burned out and still showing up know this: you’re doing better than you think. And if you’d like support in fueling your team’s focus (without sacrificing yours), let’s talk.
